Walk, obviously. And now we know that maybe he came up with his whiskey recipe while doing it.
A new study from Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg tells us what all of us already knew, i.e. when we move around, sometimes ideas come to us. I’ve been thinking a lot about this for the past two years because lockdowns and such have slowed me down physically and I’ve noticed the creative juices drying up at the same time.
But enough about me – we’ll come back to that later. The study wasn’t actually about movement per se, but moving freely without external constraints. The author studies walking, but also suggests that even small ‘free movements’ at home can do the trick. She also specifically targets the ‘small screen’ as a potential detriment to our creativity because is focusses and restricts our movement to a tiny space.
I think we can all agree that our best ideas come to us while moving (or maybe sitting on the toilet), so yesterday I jumped in the car and drove myself to the edge of the Cévennes for a little ride that isn’t one of my usuals. I even turned off the course I’d made on Ride With GPS to make sure I wasn’t restricted by my own creativity!
I’ll have to stop reading blogs and get out more.
As long as it’s on the ‘big screen’ I think you’re safe.
It’s so interesting. Thanks for your sharing. I also feel that the “small screen” limits our creativity. I’ve been spending a lot of time on my “small “, and I feel like that’s not good at all. I started to move away from it, starting with walking, doing chores around the house. And yes, especially walking, cycling around, I get to think more, come up with more ideas and feel very comfortable, like opening my mind more.
It’s hard to think of a time we didn’t have ‘the small screen’, even if it’s only been a little over a decade for me. I’m starting to leave home without my phone now, which seems risqué, but ridiculous if you’ve existed before mobile phones existed! Keep up the good work!
