While I’ve been sidelined by my (hopefully) recovering knee and a cracked rib caused by coughing (yes, this is possible), I’ve not been riding much outside. I did a short and flat one this morning, though, and have a couple of questions for you.
- Why on earth would someone ride with a surgical mask? I was going to add ‘still’, but even when Covid was raging I thought this was the height of silliness. I saw this guy twice this morning, so it stuck with me.
- Do they call my Look pedals ‘Blade’ because the part I’ve circled on the left cuts into my calf when I walk my bike? What is this thing serving, if not that?

There is movement on my custom Ti bike build, too, but I’m too caught in the weeds to talk about it now. Les choses bougent, though!
Gerry, I’m sorry to hear about the sideline and the cause of it. I know you obliquely referenced it, but I didn’t realize the rib too! Ouch.
Now, to make you feel truly old and decrepit……..my 90-year old father has a theory that guys who get older (and we’re approaching it) begin ranting about small irritations that tent to take on a large presence in life. You know: things like thin paper plates, smaller yogurt containers, fewer chips (crisps) in the bag, and apparently surgical masks on cyclists (I agree with you), and an extra piece of plastic on your cycling pedals. This little missive is to express support for your points of view……but may serve as a warning. Patty alerts me that I’m falling victim to this piece of the aging process.
Good luck on the Ti build. Keep us posted on the progress.
Thanks, Eric. I don’t recommend a broken rib to anyone, especially if you’re having coughing fits after you break it. I’ve never given birth, but I’m not convinced it’d be worse.
Your father is a wise man, although in my defense I’ve been watching The Kominsky Method lately, which is essentially two old guys complaining about stuff for 30 min at a pop. I’m being influenced from the outside.
I’ll PM you about that chat we will need to have soon.
I am very sorry to hear about the rib. That is no laughing matter, literally as well as metaphorically.
I agree with Eric. As you get older almost everything in the world is only there to annoy you.
A little chuckle doesn’t hurt too much, so thanks for giving me one!
