Training Update + a Grosse Scheidegg

I don’t have too much to report after my 3rd training block. I’m near the middle of a week of recovery, so trying my damndest to keep the weight near 71kg. I’m now down nearly 3 kilograms since the beginning of the year, but I’m noticing an irritating plateau arising.

Some stats: Since January 1st I’ve been on the bike 35 times for a total of 1822 kilometers (more really – I don’t usually count trainer rides). The two metrics I’m focusing on though are HOURS: 87.5 and CLIMBING: 17,500 meters. These two will rise a lot, with ‘climbing’ going exponential if all goes well. I see from the leaderboard of 44|5 Cycling Tours’ Strava club that I’m usually in the weekly top ten, but haven’t yet had a regular appearance on the podium. If training progresses as I hope, I better get at least a bronze from time to time.

Today’s photo is from a climb I haven’t done yet, but am really looking forward to. It’s the road that climbs from Grindelwald to Meiringen in Switzerland, over Grosse Scheidegg, a not-very-high-pass of just under 2000 meters, but surrounded by Alpine monsters, like the Eiger in the distance on the right (I think). It’s also car free for much of the way, which is going to make our cycling tour (early September) a little challenging for the van driver, but will be a dream for the riders.

  1. Beautiful part of Switzerland Jerry. Meiringen is super. Hope you’re taking your wife and do a bit of tourist stuff too. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stayed there and wrote his book The Final Problem. Take a funicular up to Reichenbach Falls where Sherlock and Moriarty fought falling over the edge. Also Sherlock Holmes museum in Meiringen. Do the gorge walk as it is well, gorgeous. And you have to have a meringue or two as it is reputed to have been ‘invented’ in Meiringen. And good job on the stats.

    • Thanks for the info, Luc. I’ll add that to my itinerary notes for the clients! I won’t have time to do more than ride it, I’m afraid. It’s a tour we’re running from Lake Geneva to Lago Maggiore. Really looking forward to this, though. Have never really ridden the Swiss Alps.
